The Dungeon

 

Type of project : Narrative level produced in Unreal Engine.

 

Production time: 25H

 

Realization: individual

Narrative context : A prisoner wakes up to find that his cell is open. In wanting to escape, he discovers the horror that awaits him outside.

Constraints

 

  • Place : The environment had to have an interior and an exterior.

  • Assets : All the assets, sounds and music used had to be royalty free.

  • Surprise : The level had to include an unexpected / surprising narrative element.

  • Challenge : It was forbidden to use textual or audio narration.

  • Length: The level had to last between 1.5 to 2.5 minutes.

design Intentions

variation of emotions

Give the player the illusion of freedom. As the story progresses, a feeling of anxiety slowly takes over the player.

As the use of text was prohibited, environmental storytelling was essential to make the player understand the story and make them experience different emotions.

 

Feeling of false freedom

 

  • Open lock on the ground at the cell's entrance.

  • Empty dungeon.

  • Open doors.

 

Anxiety / fear

 

  • Skeletons on the ground in cells.

  • Bloody weapon and bones in the corridor.

  • Stool overturned and half-eaten food.

  • Bloody moon.

  • Sacrificial altar.

 

Confusion

 

  • Empty cells (except one).

  • Presence of a deer in a cell.

  • Transformation of the statues on the bridge.
